A made-in-Alberta film shot partly north of Airdrie in Didsbury will premiere worldwide this month at one of the most prestigious film festivals.
The Order will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August, while the North American premiere will be at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. The film will be released in theatres later this year.
The film, starring Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) and Nicholas Hoult, who starred in the black-comedy horror The Menu, is based on the book The Silent Brotherhood, written by award-winning journalist Kevin Flynn and co-author Gary Gerhardt. The book chronicles the inner workings of one of the most dangerous domestic terror groups in the United States, named The Silent Brotherhood.
The film is set in the early 1980s, following a series of violent bank robberies across America's Pacific Northwest, which leave law enforcement struggling to pin down the suspects. An F.B.I agent (Law) who works out of the bucolic town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, begins to suspect that the bank heists are not for financial gain but are carried out by a group of domestic terrorists and are being inspired by a cult-like, captivating leader (Hoult).
The news is one of many announcements featuring Alberta-shot films. Recently, Tubi announced that the southern Alberta-made film Wynonna Earp had released its trailer and will be streaming on Tubi this fall.
According to the Alberta chapter of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), there are several high-profile television series and movies being shot in the province, including the second season of Netflix's hit coming-of-age series, My Life With the Walter Boys, as well as the western drama series The Abandons, also a Netflix production. Other film productions include a mysterious project titled UCC: JBR Project, Die, My Love, and Heartland.
