Although Kindersley is a small community with around 5000 people, it has a huge personality, with limitless opportunities, thriving agriculture and oil and gas industries, and endless recreation.
A vibrant and progressive hub of West Central Saskatchewan, Kindersley offers the tranquility of a rural lifestyle with all the amenities and benefits of a small city. Innovation and entrepreneurship are alive and well here, as any visit to our diverse selection of major outlets, specialty stores, and local businesses will attest.
Conveniently located along Highway 7, the major transportation corridor linking Calgary and Saskatoon, Kindersley is a fun and worthwhile stop if you’re driving through the area.
Recreation
Kindersley features many state-of-the-art recreation facilities including the indoor Kindersley Aquatic Centre, indoor ice hockey and curling arenas located at the West Central Events Centre, and outdoor ice hockey arenas and ball diamonds.
If you’re looking to relax or let the kids run, there’s so much to do. Want to spend some time in the sun? Head to Kindersley’s new Beach area at the Motherwell Reservoir to take a walk at the fully paved walking trail. Kindersley also has many greenspaces and playgrounds throughout the town to enjoy.
Tourism & Events
The friendly and knowledgeable Tourism Advisors located at the Kindersley & District Plains Museum during the summer season do a fantastic job putting on events. There are always upcoming events to look forward to. May through August annually, you can expect to see BBQ fundraisers, paint nights, trail nights, a large Canada Day celebration, and many more creative ideas to keep you and your family busy.
Kindersley is also home to many not-for-profit organizations that host entertaining experiences throughout the year. Many of them are constantly recruiting new volunteers.
The Goose Festival is hosted in the fall of every year, and many locals get together to celebrate. The Chamber of Commerce is the main driver of that. Goose Festival includes attractions such as a parade, sidewalk sales, car show, dance, antique threshing demonstrations, and more!
In the winter, the annual Museum of Lights event is hosted at the Kindersley & District Plains Museum. With the fall and winter being such busy seasons for families, it is a great way to socialize and meet others when things slow down for the holiday season.
The Kindersley Rodeo, hosted by the Kindersley Rodeo Committee is another very important local event that is hosted in the late spring.
A potential Recreation Registration Night idea has been pitched. There are plans to get the event started in September, be sure to stay tuned for updates.
Are You New to Town?
If you are new to Kindersley, or know someone who is, you can pick up a “Welcome to Kindersley” package from the Town of Kindersley Administration Office or during the summer season, the Kindersley & District Plains Museum. Various agencies in town may also have them available such as the real estate agencies.
The “Welcome to Kindersley” package includes information on community groups and organizations, real estate and rental properties, local businesses, garbage and recycle pickup, and much, much more!
History of the Name
Where did Kindersley get its name? Our town was named in honor of Sir Robert Kindersley, who was a heavy stockholder in the Canadian National Railway. Later, he was also the governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. More information can be found in books such as “What’s in a Name” by E.T. Russell or by picking up a “Kindersley Memories” book from the Kindersley & District Plains Museum.
In return for naming the Town after him, Lord Kindersley sent us an oil canvas painting of himself and also the Chain of Office that our Mayor wears for special events. Each link on the Chain of Office is engraved with each new Mayor’s name.
Municipal Election
The Municipal Elections are coming up this fall. In preparation, here are some details.
Currently our Town Council is made up of Mayor Rod Perkins, Deputy Mayor Randy Ervine, and Councillors Gary Becker, Dean Galbraith, Rob Anderson, Chris Baker, and Warren Schafer.
Council nominations will be open from September 17th until October 9th. You can nominate yourself or pick up a form if you know someone who wants to apply. On October 9th, the nomination form MUST be received by a Nomination Clerk by 4PM sharp – even a minute after, it will not be accepted.
If you nominate yourself for Council and wish to remove your nomination, you must do so by October 10th.
Town elections will take place on November 13th. Advanced polling will be available, with the location and date to be determined.
Being on Council consists of two meetings per month as well as sitting on some local boards and committees. Making connections with residents of Town is also a very important part of a Councillor’s duties.
For those who are interested in being involved in a Town Council or Municipal Government, the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association is hosting a candidate school for cities, towns, and villages on September 11th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
The opportunities for careers, community, business, recreation, and more are endless in Kindersley. Whether you’re a resident looking for more to do, or a visitor passing through, this small town will not disappoint.
