With visual art galleries, historical archives, incredible performances, and more, the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre shines as the cultural hub for locals and visitors in Medicine Hat.
In the main building, you’ll find temporary visual art and heritage exhibitions, temporary heritage exhibitions, a permanent museum exhibition, a 700-seat theatre with tons of upcoming theatre performances, education and cultural programs, and access to the Collections of Archival Records, Art, and Artefacts.
The Archives in particular offer a unique resource to visitors, explained Tobie Laliberte, Marketing Specialist for the City of Medicine Hat. “Anyone who visits can access archival records on the topic of their choice. It could be a history topic, or a home they purchased, or family history in the area.” So whether you’re looking for specific information, or just want to learn more about the City, the Archives offer a trove of information.
The galleries and archives are also easily accessible to anyone who wishes to visit. “The admission is always pay what you will,” said Tobie, “so people decide from their experience or their financial ability, what they want or are able to pay.”
The Esplanade also recently began hosting adult art classes, including the painting class Acrylic Alchemy, which is open for fall registration.
Alongside the must-see exhibitions, the Esplanade is incredibly well-known for the performances it hosts in the theatre.
“We have a variety of shows throughout the year,” said Tobie. “From rock to classical music, through circus and dance performances, there’s always a quality act for everyone to enjoy.” Some upcoming shows include stand-up comedian Aparna Nancherla, country artist Morgan Klaiber, and a theatrical performance of Robin Hood by Calgary’s Dufflebag Theatre.
In addition to the larger theatre performances, the Esplanade hosts a smaller On-Stage Series, which begins October 3rd with classical pianist, Sarah Hagan.
“The On-Stage Series is a very intimate type of show,” Tobie explained, “where the audience sits on the main stage of the theatre with the performer. It’s a smaller crowd, so you get to experience performance in a unique way.”
This series features six shows throughout the season. A ticket bundle is available for purchase that includes all six shows at a discounted price.
Tobie continued, “We also take care of Co-op Place Arena entertainment. We put on shows and events there which are bigger and greater, like the upcoming show with Sam Roberts Band, The Strumbellas, and local guest Vanity Trip.”
There’s no shortage of culture arts, heritage, education, and entertainment when you visit the Esplanade.
“There’s always, simply, only quality on our stages and spaces,” said Tobie. “It’s definitely worth the trip.”
