In the case of Stuart Lawrence, he has no such feelings, as he has managed to hold onto his 1981 GMC Sierra that he bought as a teenager and has kept in good, well-kept, and reliable condition. 

Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu eyes new markets, smaller trade delegations

Ottawa's new trade minister says he's looking to sign deals in South America, Southeast Asia, Africa and beyond — and to convince businesses to actually use the trade agreements Canada has already signed.

"My primary role as Canada's top salesman is to be out there hustling, opening doors for businesses and accessing new markets," Maninder Sidhu told The Canadian Press.

"My phone has been ringing with opportunities because people want to deal with reliable, stable trading partners."

Kyle RCMP respond to collisions and vehicle fire

Officers with the Kyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls for service over the past week, including collisions and a vehicle fire.

The detachment received a report of a deer-related collision on Highway 7 around 10:14 p.m. on July 27. No injuries were reported, and the incident was documented for insurance purposes.

On July 28, Kyle RCMP attended a well-being check in Rosetown. Details of the request were not disclosed.

Nuclear power cooperation a key topic at 79th Annual Midwestern Legislative Conference

Nuclear energy and its place in Saskatchewan were one of the key items being discussed during the 79th Annual Midwestern Legislative Conference, taking place in Saskatoon. A panel consisting of Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel, and Westinghouse President John Gorman had some information on the current progress for nuclear development in Saskatchewan.

Currently, SaskPower is working on a site for a Small Modular Reactor for the Estevan area, though a final decision on the project would not come until around 2030.

Sentencing dates loom for multiple accused in Kindersley Court

Several cases were heard in Kindersley Provincial Court on July 29, with a number of matters adjourned to later dates.

Raelene Buchacher, who is charged with fraud and failing to appear in court, has had a trial date set for Oct. 7.

Amanda Watson had her sentencing adjourned to Aug. 19. Her defence lawyer told the court they are preparing to enter guilty pleas.

Brandon Wasylenchuk’s case was adjourned to Aug. 12 for sentencing. He faces a charge of sexual assault, and the Crown and defence are expected to present a joint submission.

City issues road safety advisory

The City of Swift Current has issued a road safety advisory after a thunderstorm downpoured on the community Saturday evening.

"Due to the significant rainfall we’ve received, many local roads currently have high water levels, creating hazardous driving conditions," the city said in a social media post at 8:16 p.m.

The release also states that city crews are actively working on the affected areas.

Power washes out in Swift Current

Updated on Sunday, August 3, at 8 a.m.

The City of Swift Current says the power outages affecting residents and businesses have been solved.

Swift Current shared the update at 10:06 p.m. on Saturday, roughly 2:30 hours after power outages began.

The outage was caused by lightning damaging a power line, according to the city.

Funnel cloud advisory issued for southwest

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a special weather statement for Southwest Saskatchewan on Saturday advising of the potential for funnel clouds to form throughout the day.

The advisory affects the city of Swift Current as well as the towns of Shaunavon, Eastend, Maple Creek, Val Marie, Leader, Gull Lake, Cabri, Kyle, Herbert and surrounding areas.

Canada Post workers vote to reject latest contract offer

Unionized workers at Canada Post have voted to reject the Crown corporation's latest contract offer.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said Friday that 68.5 per cent of urban mail carriers who voted were against the deal, while their rural and suburban colleagues were 69.4 per cent against.

The offer included wage hikes of about 13 per cent over four years but also added part-time workers that Canada Post has said are necessary to keep the postal service afloat.

The union had urged the roughly 55,000 postal service workers it represents to reject the proposal.
