Wildcats game postponed due to weather

The Swift Current Innovation Federal Credit Union Wildcats are staying home tonight.

Due to road conditions from the snowfall, the Wildcats have postponed their game scheduled for tonight in Saskatoon.

That game will be made up at a later date.

Swift Current doesn't have another Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League game on their schedule until Saturday, November 30th in Weyburn.

The Wildcats sit second in the league standings and are two points up on Saskatoon.

A ‘lot of ground’ remains between Canada Post, workers as strike talks progress

Canada Post and the postal workers union found slivers of consensus Tuesday amid talks with a special mediator, but "a lot of ground" remains between them on the key concerns as a countrywide strike entered its fifth day.

“On smaller issues, we were able to find some progress,” said Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton in a phone interview.

"The special mediator has helped facilitate those discussions. So we're going to continue to be at it. We're committed to getting collective agreements," he said, adding that arbitration is off the table for now.

Inflation rate rises to 2% in October, reducing odds of another jumbo rate cut

Canada's inflation rate climbed back up to two per cent in October, shifting expectations slightly in favour of a smaller, quarter-percentage point interest rate cut next month. 

The report from Statistics Canada on Tuesday said prices in October increased at a faster annual pace in five out of the eight major components of the consumer price index.

A major driving factor of the uptick in headline inflation was gasoline prices on an annual basis falling to a lesser extent in October compared with September.

Travel not recommended on Trans-Canada Highway

Update at 5:35 p.m. 

The Trans-Canada Highway is open again between Waldeck and Rush Lake.

The Highway Hotline notes travel is not recommended between Swift Current and Rush Lake.

The Trans-Canada Highway between Waldeck and Rush Lake is currently closed due to multiple semis jack-knifed heading eastbound.

Kevin James Ohleiser

November 9, 1958 - November 4, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our brother, brother-in-law and uncle Kevin James Ohlheiser.  Kevin passed away at his home in Saskatoon Monday November 4, 2024, at the age of 65.

Kevin was born November 9th, 1958, in Gull Lake to Bob & Betty Ohlheiser.  He attended school in Gull Lake and throughout his school years, he enjoyed many activities including playing football, hockey & curling.

Two southwest border crossings have hours of operations shaved

A big shift in hours of operation for a southwestern Saskatchewan Canada-U.S. border crossing will come into effect early next year.

Yesterday the Canadian Border Services Agency announced a reduction of hours for 35 ports of entry, including six in Saskatchewan and two in the southwest, beginning on Jan. 6, 2025. 

Kyle Christmas display helping spread good cheer

Driving through Kyle, people might spot a very merry sight. 

The yard of Scott Rein, a local resident, has been decorated, lit up, and set to carrolling for the holidays. Characters from Peanuts, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Sesame Street can be seen, along with a classic nativity display, various reindeer, and even a mailbox for letters to Santa that is counting down the days till Christmas. 

All throughout, music plays softly to help set the Christmas mood. 

Cops & Coffee crops up for Thursday

Swift Current business owners and chamber members are invited to the third session of Cops & Coffee where attendees will learn all about alternative measures.

The Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce will host the event beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Innovation Credit Union building this Thursday. 

Karla Weins, chief executive officer for the Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce, noted that they're also seeking input on other issues that the RCMP can address.

Smile Cookies to support Southwest Crisis Services

Smile Cookies are back for the season, available at all Swift Current Tims locations for a limited time to support two local non-profits.

From November 18 to 24 Smile Cookies will be for sale and all proceeds will be split between Southwest Crisis Services and Tims Camps.

Caitlin Mann, president of Southwest Crisis Services, noted that board members and staff from the non-profit have been volunteering to decorate some of the smile cookies.
