Walter John Bartko
March 29, 1940 – August 22, 2024

The sudden and unexpected death of Walter John Bartko, age 84, of Calgary, AB occurred on Thursday August 22, 2024, at Middle Lake, SK. He was a dear father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Walter was born on March 29, 1940 to Dmytro and Bessie (Nee Moroz) Bartko, the youngest of eight children.

He obtained all his education at Dunwell and Weekes Public Schools. Walter spent many years playing hockey, curling and hardball in the community.  He was a member of the Weekes Red Sox Senior Men’s baseball club at age 13. Those years would be forever cherished by him.

Following graduation, Walter began employment at a sawmill, and then at Carragana Coop, as a fuel truck driver.

Walter married Dorothy McKenney from Crooked River, SK. on October 9th, 1965. They then moved to Saskatoon, where Walter was employed at Redi Mix Concrete for 7 years.

From this union they were blessed with two children, Sean and Cheryl. They resided there until 1973 when Walter took a position with City of Calgary Transit department. Walter was employed there for 41 years. He received many awards and commendations for exemplary service.

Walter enjoyed traveling between the provinces of B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan, visiting his children, grandchildren, and friends.

Walter had many hobbies, which included hunting, fishing, gardening, mechanics, dancing, singing and playing guitar and the fiddle. He will most be remembered for his cheerful, generous, helpful nature. He was truly “ONE OF A KIND!”  His many stories and jokes will not be forgotten.

Walter will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his two children: Sean (Lissa Mae Faelnar) Bartko of Calgary, and Cheryl Bartko of Middle Lake; grandchildren Erin Bartko of Calgary and Jace Bartko - Rodgers of Airdrie, AB; brother Raymond Bartko of Kimberly BC; numerous nieces, nephews and by many good friends in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Walter was Predeceased by his parents Dmytro and Bessi Bartko; wife Dorothy Bartko; brothers and sisters Miro (George) Bartko; Emily (Walter) Johnson, Bill (Helen) Bartko, Jean (Tony) Battuello, Ann Potter, Sylvia (Sydney) Pegg.

A private family Graveside Service will be held at a later date at St. Andrews Cemetery Carragana. Memorial donations in Walter’s memory may be directed to Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation.
