Humboldt City Council mulled over an idea sent in by a resident to honour high profile national, international and Olympic athletes who come from the community.

At its regular meeting this past Monday, Humboldt City Council read a letter suggesting that the city could consider signage or a display honouring the four Humboldt athletes who have achieved their dream of reaching the Olympics.

“We have a wonder tribute at Glenn Hall Park recognizing the young men form here who have realized their dreams of playing in the NHL,” said the letter submitted by Dianne Schenn. “I think it would be nice to show our pride and celebrate our Olympians in the same way.”

The letter suggested a space near the entrance to the Uniplex on Highway 5 might be appropriate.

Councillor Rob Muench proposed that the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame Committee might want to look into the project that honours Lyndon Rush, Brianne Theisen-Eaton, Paige Crozon and Jacob Wassermann, along with other athletes identified at a later date. The Sports Hall of Fame Committee originally undertook the hockey display adjacent to Highway 5 at Glen Hall Park.

In the end, Jennifer Fitzpatrick, director of Cultural Services, said that the Sports Hall of Fame was a standing initiative of that department, and that she would be able to put the matter in front of the group at their next meeting.

The Council voted to refer the matter to the City’s Cultural Services Department for exploration and a report.
