In 2023, 1,124 speeding tickets were issued by Alberta Mounties during the Labour Day long weekend, which prompted RCMP to issue a warning to motorists ahead of this year's long weekend.

"We will be out again this year working to keep people safe. I hope our reported numbers are much lower this year,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic.

Also, during the Labour Day long weekend last year, 41 tickets were issued for distracted driving and 46 for liquor and cannabis offences. Before departing on your long weekend adventures, Mounties ask that you remember the following:

  • Make sure your vehicle and equipment are in good working order.
  • Ensure your trailer is connected correctly and within acceptable weight limits of your combined vehicle weight rating.
  • Leave with plenty of time to get to your destination. If you’re running late, prioritize getting there safer, not faster.
  • Eliminate distractions by placing your mobile phone in your glove box or center console out of reach.
  • Follow posted speed limits and always drive to conditions.
  • Make sure you and your passengers buckle up.
  • Never drive tired or impaired.

"Traffic safety is everyone's responsibility. Phone 911 if you observe dangerous driving," Mounties added.
