A 36 year old Stephenfield man is facing numerous charges after fleeing police, and intentionally colliding his vehicle into a Winkler Police vehicle several times.

Friday night just before 11 p.m. Winkler officers were called to a theft at 7-11 just off the corner of Main Street and Highway 14. Witnesses pointed out a suspect in a vehicle in the area, and when police approached, the suspect fled the scene.

According to information released by police, a brief pursuit ensued westbound on Highway 14, which is when the suspect collided with the police vehicle. This caused the suspect to lose control of his vehicle, and come to a stop in the north ditch of Highway 14, west of Road 23 West. With the assistance of Morden Police Service, officers then took the suspect into custody.

According to a news release issued about the incident, the suspect exhibited signs of alcohol impairment, and subsequently provided breath samples with readings of 90 mg%, which is above the legal blood alcohol concentration limit while operating a vehicle.

Tyler James Hiebert has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Possess Property Obtained by Crime

  • Fail to Stop Motor Vehicle while Pursued by a Peace Officer

  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle

  • Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon

  • Operation of a Conveyance while Impaired

  • Operation of a Conveyance with a Blood Alcohol Concentration above 80 mg%

Hiebert was remanded into custody, and will appear in court in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

The westbound lanes of Highway 14 between Road 23 West and Highway 3 were closed for several hours, but have since reopened, while police investigated the incident with assistance from a Collision Reconstructionist from RCMP Traffic Services.

There were no injuries to any officer, or the suspect, as a result of this incident.
