During yesterday's update, Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange talked about the changes being made in Alberta schools to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
- Initiating close-contact notification across schools in a phased approach beginning October 12.
- Alberta Health will publicly report the name of each school with at least 2 COVID cases beginning October 6. The name's of the schools will be available online.
- In Kindergarten to grade 6, targeted rapid test programs of schools with outbreaks of 10 or more cases. Every student, parent, and staff member of these schools may access a rapid test for free.
- Strongly encouraging school authorities to implement mandatory vaccination or proof of a negative COVID test for all school staff. This would not include students.
"This 4th wave has been challenging." says LaGrange, "Especially for children aged 5 to 11 who aren't eligible for the COVID vaccine. We're in a very different situation than we were a few months ago."
As of October 4, 2021 the City of Grande Prairie has 510 active cases of COVID-19, and the County of Grande Prairie has 253 cases.
Cases of COVID-19 across the rest of the province sit at 19,456 active cases.
Hospitalizations are currently at 1,094, and a total of 252 Albertans are in intensive care receiving treatment.
Vaccination data are up-to-date as of end of day October 4, 2021
- 6,142,455 doses administered
- 84.5% of Albertans 12+ with at least 1 dose
- 75.1% of Albertans 12+ fully vaccinated
In Grande Prairie 57.6% of people eligible are fully vaccinated, and 68.6% of residents have received at least one dose. In the County of Grande Prairie 56.7% have received both shots, with 67.4% partially vaccinated.
