Dozens of residents of a Winnipeg apartment building have been displaced after a fire broke out late Wednesday morning.

At 11:36 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a two-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Ross Avenue. Crews arrived to find smoke in the building, but the sprinkler system had already activated, suppressing the fire before it spread further.

Water damage from the sprinklers forced the evacuation of the building. Firefighters helped some residents leave, while others were able to exit on their own.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team is assisting approximately 44 displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations. A Winnipeg Transit bus was also brought in to provide shelter.

One person was assessed by paramedics and taken to the hospital in stable condition. Damage estimates are pending, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
