A 23 year old male was transported to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg by ambulance in stable condition after he was involved in a shooting with an RCMP officer near Sanford Wednesday night.

According to information released by RCMP,  officers were called around 9:10 p.m. to a report of an assault and disturbance at a home located in the R.M. of Macdonald. Information received indicated the male had assaulted a female inside the home, and attempted to light several vehicles on fire.

When officers arrived they were confronted by the 23-year-old who was armed with an edged weapon.

The confrontation led to an officer discharging their firearm. The male sustained a gunshot injury, was taken into custody and provided immediate medical attention by the officers. He has since been released from hospital into police custody where he remains.

No other injuries were reported. According to RCMP, no further details will be provided at this time.

According to information issued by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU), which is now investigating the incident, the shooting occurred around 11 p.m. after officers searched a wooded area. The man emerged, armed with an edged weapon. A use-of-force encounter occurred and an officer discharged a firearm, striking the man in his leg.

As any injury caused by the discharge of a firearm by a police officer is defined as a serious injury, the IIU is mandated to investigate. The investigation is ongoing, so no further details will be provided at this time.
