The Winkler Flyers play their first of two pre-season games tonight (7:30 p.m.) at home against the Steinbach Pistons. The two teams will also meet next Friday in Winkler. The defending Turnbull Cup champions will open the 2024-25 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season on Friday, September 20th against the Pistons. 


The Brandon Wheat Kings play their exhibition opener tonight against the Saskatoon Blades at Westoba Place. The Wheat Kings signed defenseman Dylan Ronald to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. The 17-year-old from Ponoka, Alberta was an invitee to training camp. The five-foot-11, 180-pounder, played for the Drumheller Dragons of the AJHL last season after returning from a broken leg.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes season will be on the line tonight at Blue Cross Park. The Fish face the Sioux Falls Canaries in game two of the American Association's best-of-three West Division semifinal. The Canaries took the series opener 5-0 Wednesday night in Sioux Falls. 


Al Briscoe & Mike Walker of St. Boniface captured Golf Manitoba's Senior Men's Four-Ball Championship Thursday at the Shilo Country Club. Briscoe & Walker birdied the final three holes and finished at six-under par 66. John Mackinnon & Brad Moore of Pine Ridge were one shot back. Bill North & Bruce North of Carman were even par 72 and finished in a tie for seventh place. 


Canada picked up three medals on day eight of the Paralympic Games in Paris. Swimmer Aurelie Rivard captured gold in the 400m freestyle S10 while Tess Routliffe earned bronze in the 100m breaststroke SB7. Wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos won gold in the T53 800 metres. Alison Levine and Iulian Ciobanu settled for fourth in the boccia BC4 pairs event, falling to Thailand’s Pornchok Larpyen and Nuanchan Phonsila 6-1. Canada’s men’s wheelchair basketball team lost 80-43 to the United States in the semifinals and will meet Germany in the bronze medal game. Canada will face Brazil in the bronze medal game in women’s sitting volleyball after dropping a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) decision to China in the semifinals. Canadian athletes have won 20 medals in Paris including six gold, six silver and eight bronze.
