The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after an officer-involved shooting earlier this week.
occurred on September 4 near Sanford in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald.
RCMP responded to a call around 11 p.m. on Sept. 4 near Sanford, Man., in the RM of Macdonald. Callers to the RCMP reported that a man was assaulting a woman and setting vehicles on fire on a rural property.
When officers arrived, they were informed that the man had fled into a wooded area. The RCMP alleges that during their search, the man emerged, armed with an edged weapon, leading to a use-of-force encounter. An officer discharged a firearm, hitting the man in the leg.
The man was transported to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg in stable condition and later released into police custody.
As the incident involved a serious injury caused by police, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
