The Winkler Flyers won their pre-season opener Friday night. Kam Thomas scored with nine seconds left in overtime to lift the defending Turnbull Cup champions past the Steinbach Pistons 3-2. Brendan Vincent had both Winkler goals in regulation. The Flyers will play their final pre-season game next Friday at home against Steinbach.


Jaxon Jacobson scored twice as the Brandon Wheat Kings won their exhibition opener 4-2 over the Saskatoon Blades at Westoba Place. Caleb Hadland and Ben Binder Nord also scored for the Wheat Kings who will face the Blades in Saskatoon on Sunday.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Saskatchewan Roughriders today (2 p.m.) in the 20th Banjo Bowl. Offensive lineman Pat Neufeld and defensive back Marquise Bridges were added to the roster. Linebacker Adam Bighill has been moved to the six-game injured list. Winnipeg Hall of Fame running back Charles Roberts will be added to the Ring of Honour at halftime. The Blue Bombers beat the Riders 35-33 in the Labour Day Classic last Sunday in Regina.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes and Sioux Falls Canaries will meet tonight at Blue Cross Park in the deciding third game of their American Association West Division semifinal. Max Murphy and Edwin Arroyo homered for the Fish who plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat the Canaries 7-3 Friday night in game two.


Canadian athletes won three medals on day nine of the Paralympics. Swimmer Sebastian Massabie of Toronto captured gold in the 50 metre freestyle. Wheelchair racer Cody Fournie of Victoria won gold in the 100 meters and Jesse Zesseu of Toronto earned silver in discus. Canada has won 23 medals in Paris including eight gold, seven silver and eight bronze.
