The Banjo Bowl belongs to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Zach Collaros threw for 231 yards and one touchdown as Winnipeg downed the Saskatchewan Roughriders 26-21. Brady Oliveira ran for 43 yards and caught six passes for 60 yards. Kenny Lawler hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass. Sergio Castillo kicked four field goals including a 39-yarder that extended Winnipeg’s lead to five points with 68 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Tyrell Ford intercepted Riders quarterback Trevor Harris twice. His second pick of the game with 45 seconds left sealed the win for the Blue Bombers who improved to 7-6. Winnipeg has the week 15 bye. The Bombers next game is Saturday, September 21st against the Elks in Edmonton.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes will face the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks in the American Association’s West Division final. Miles Simington homered and drove in five runs as the Fish defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 10-3 in the deciding third game of their opening round playoff series Saturday night at Blue Cross Park. Edwin Arroyo also went deep for the Goldeyes. The Chicago Dogs will meet the Kane County Cougars in the East Division final.


Swimmer Nicholas Bennett and para canoeist Brianna Hennessy will be Canada’s flag-bearers for Sunday’s closing ceremonies of the Paralympic Games in Paris. Bennett won two gold medals and a silver in the pool. Hennessy captured silver on Saturday in the Va’a single 200 metres and will also race in kayak singles on Sunday. Also, on Saturday Austin Smeenk captured gold in athletics 800 metres; swimmer Danielle Dorris won gold in the 50 metre butterfly. Nate Riech finished second in athletics 1500 metres; Shelby Newkirk finished third in the 100 metre backstroke and the women’s sitting volleyball team captured bronze. Canadian athletes have won 29 medals in Paris including 10 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze.
