A ceremony took place last Friday at Southport Aerospace in honour of Dawn Froese, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Plains. She was awarded a commendation and presented with a medal after being nominated.
Froese shared her thoughts on the event.
"They wanted to give 100 medals as part of the 100 Canadians Campaign. The campaign was designed to recognize civilian members of the Canadian population who reflect RCAF values such as loyalty, integrity, courage, excellence, inclusion, and accountability by creating a positive impact within their community. I was chosen for our area. Someone nominated me. I have no idea who, but it was pretty cool."
She mentioned she was somewhat embarrassed but still pleased with the recognition. Froese added that the base at Moose Jaw arranged for the event to take place in Southport.
"It was exciting, and it was really neat because my mom and dad could be there, and my husband came as well. My dad is a veteran, so it was just nice to have him there. We even had a picture taken of the two of us. It was part of their regular muster in the morning. I also did a presentation on Big Brothers Big Sisters and what we do for the community beforehand. Then the commander presented me with the medal."
This is not the first award Froese has received. She was recently honoured with the Queen's Jubilee Medal.
"It is humbling, but it's also nice that people recognize the work I'm doing in this community. I love my job, where I get to find mentors for kids, get to know the kids, and help them explore their world. I think it's fabulous, which is why I've been here for so long. It's nice when someone else appreciates it, too."
Froese has been with the organization for 29 years and is excited to be heading into her 30th. She has also received the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Executive Director Award, as well as other agency-oriented accolades.
"Whoever nominated me, thank you. It was wonderful to receive this recognition on Friday in our hometown and out at Southport."
