Penner Park. SRSS safety Cruz Greenham had two interceptions. The Sabres next game is Wednesday, September 18th at home against the River East Kodiaks. The Steinbach Regional varsity football team will play its home opener today (5 p.m.) against Grant Park.
The Hanover Kickers and Niverville Force SC played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night at the Steinbach Soccer Park. Noah Froese and Dennis Fuss did the goal scoring for the Kickers while Parker Davis and Marius Enns replied for Force SC. Hanover (1-13-3) will play its regular season finale Monday night in Winnipeg against AK Academy. Niverville (7-6-4) will host Lucania United FC on Sunday.
Hayden Wheddon scored a power play goal 4:02 into overtime to lift the Niverville Nighthawks past the Selkirk Steelers 4-3. Dawson Zeller added a pair of goals for the Nighthawks, His second of the game at 15:36 of the third period tied the score at 3-3. Merik Boles also scored for Niverville. The Nighthawks play their final pre-season game Saturday in Niverville against the Steinbach Pistons. The Nighthawks will open the 2024-25 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season at home next Friday against the Winnipeg Freeze.
The 2024 Canadian Senior Men’s Championship begins today at Saugeen Golf Club in Saugeen Shores, Ontario. Seven Manitobans are in the field of 156 including Jay Doyle, Todd Fanning, Mike Walker, Dwayne Heinrichs, Rob Oliphant, Ron Cornell and Provincial champion Brad Moore.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are going the distance in their American Association West Division Championship Series. The RedHawks rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Fish Wednesday night in Winnipeg. Fargo-Moorhead scored the tying and go ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning and added an insurance run in the ninth. Max Murphy drove in a pair of runs for the Goldeyes. The deciding third game goes tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Blue Cross Park. The winner will meet the Kane County Cougars in the Wolff Cup final. The Cougars defeated the Chicago Dogs 3-2 and swept the East Division Championship Series in two straight.
Canada battles Finland in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals men's tennis tournament today in Manchester, England. Led by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, Canada defeated Argentina 2-1 on Tuesday and will face host Great Britain on Sunday. Canada won the Davis Cup in 2022.
Silvia Lloris scored in the 81st minute to lift defending champion Spain to a 2-1 comeback victory over Canada in round-of-16 at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. The underdog Canadians gave Spain all they could handle in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead on Florianne Jourde's goal in the 63rd minute. Spain answered minutes later and then pulled ahead.
