The Terry Fox Run is back for another year. The event goes this Sunday, September 15 from 10:30 am until noon. As has been the case for the past few years, the run starts off at Midland Glass, 520 10th Street in Humboldt.

Participants can run, walk, bike or participate with mobility vehicles, and they’re welcome to choose their own distance or select maps for 2.5, 5, or 20 kilometre routes.

Returning as event organizer this year is Bob Bellamy who has had a long connection with the run in past years. Many volunteers throughout the years have kept the event an annual fall presence.

“The records show that the first run was organized in 1983, and it’s continued every year since then,” Bellamy says. “There have been a variety of people who have taken the leadership role in organizing it.”

Humboldt Collegiate sports teams, notably the soccer team, have historically participated and helped organize the run. Some of the former players took over the reigns as they took on teaching roles, which Bellamy says was absolutely fantastic.

The idea of the run has always been to keep Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope legacy alive as communities come together to gather pledges and make money for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run has generated millions of dollars for cancer research and is hosted in over 650 communities.

Bellamy talks a bit about this year’s theme.

“A local organizer of a Terry Fox run came up with the theme, “No Matter What.” He explained the three words that represented Terry Fox so well – no matter what. He went on to explain that Terry would not give up – he would not give up. It was just phenomenal, and that’s why we run, no matter the distance, no matter the obstacles, no matter the journey, no matter the odds – you just do it.”
