As September progresses, farmers are preparing for the fall and the Autumn Equinox on September 22. Geoffrey Bennet, from Bennet Farms in Saint Claude, is involved in dairy, beef and grain production.

He says the summer was quite eventful, with so much rain in the spring.

"It's been a decent year overall. Hay crops have been really good, but the grain crops have been touch and go."

The prairies are predicted to have a warmer-than-normal fall, according to The Weather Network, and Bennet says that it is music to his ears.

"The longer we can push it back, the better because it was a later start to the season this year. So, we're just going 100 per cent until we can't."

The local producer tells PortageOnline that it truly was an up-and-down summer.

"We had great forages, but anything in a little bit lower area got flooded out with the grains. So, it wasn't a good thing, and it definitely cost us all in yields," he continues. "I'd say with some of the crops that it was average: some below average and some above average. It was a bit of a mess."

In the future, Bennet notes that he hopes trading prices can increase.

"Farmers will have a harder time with that trade embargo with China. That's not a good thing for the canola. But overall, it's been a productive year."
