The Portage la Prairie RCMP have made an arrest following reports of animal cruelty.
On September 2nd, a Portage RCMP officer received a report that there was a man near the community gardens on 8th Avenue NW injuring a dog.
Officers were informed that a man was seen in the bushes around the community garden with a dog that began yelping. The man then exited the area without the dog. Information was provided to police on the approximate area of the animal. The officer searched the area and located the dog, which was dead.
Officers made neighbourhood inquiries to determine the identity of the suspect and animal. The officers were able to track down the suspect at his house and place 35-year-old Scott Taylor of Portage la Prairie under arrest.
Officers obtained a search warrant to search for the clothing that he was wearing to confirm what witnesses had seen. The clothing was located in a washing machine and was seized.
Taylor is charged with Injure or Endanger Other Animals and was released to appear in court at a later date.
A necropsy of the dog will be completed.
The dog belonged to Taylor.
The RCMP continue to investigate.
