The Winkler Flyers pre-season schedule came to an end Friday night. Nick Mckee scored in the seventh round of the shootout to lift Winkler past the Steinbach Pistons 5-4. Connor Jensen, Brady Craik, Mathys Blanchette and Brody Beauchemin scored in regulation for the defending Turnbull Cup champions who will open the 2024-25 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season at home next Friday against the Pistons.


Caleb Hadland scored twice and Quinn Mantei had a goal and two assists in the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-3 victory over the Regina Pats at Westoba Place. Adam Belusko and Nolan Flamand also scored for the Wheat Kings who will wrap up their pre-season schedule tonight in Regina. Brandon will open the 2024-25 Western Hockey League season Friday, September 20th at home against the defending champion Moose Jaw Warriors.


Dmitry Kuzmin scored the overtime winner as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 in their opening game at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, BC. Nikita Chibrikov, Connor Levis and Brad Lambert scored in regulation for the Jets who will face the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday and the Edmonton Oilers on Monday.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes will meet the Kane County Cougars tonight in Geneva, Illinois in game one of the American Association’s best-of-five Wolff Cup final. The series opener will feature a marquee pitching matchup between Goldeyes ace Joey Matulovich and Cougars lefty Greg Mahle.


Three Manitobans made the cut at the 2024 Canadian Senior Men’s Golf Championship in Saugeen Shores, Ontario. Todd Fanning was three-over par 75 Friday and is in a tie for 12th place at plus two. Ron Cornell was 77 and is plus eight. Jay Doyle was 77 and got in on the cut line at plus 10. Mike Walker was 81 and plus 13; Dwayne Heinrichs was 80 and plus 16; Rob Oliphant was 82 and plus 17 while provincial champion Brad Moore was 82 and plus 19.
