Grady Hoffman scored a pair of third period goals as the Steinbach Pistons won their pre-season finale 4-2 over the Nighthawks in Niverville Saturday night. Brayden Barnett and Reece Gault also found the back of the net for the Pistons who open the 2024-25 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season on Friday, September 20th against the defending Turnbull Cup champion Flyers in Winkler. Ty Kennett and Adam Vigfusson replied for the Nighthawks. Niverville will play its season opener next Friday at home against the Winnipeg Freeze.


The Brandon Wheat Kings wrapped up their exhibition schedule Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over the Pats in Regina. Joby Baumuller, Nicholas Johnson and Carter Klippenstein did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Dylan McFadyen made 23 saves. The Wheat Kings went 4-0 in the pre-season and will open the 2024-25 Western Hockey League season Friday, September 20th at home against the defending champion Moose Jaw Warriors.


The Winnipeg Jets will face the Vancouver Canucks today and the Edmonton Oilers on Monday at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C. The Jets defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 in overtime in their opening game on Friday.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Kane County Cougars Saturday night in game one of the American Association’s best-of-five Wolff Cup final. Cornelius Randolph singled home Armond Upshaw with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. The Goldeyes tied the game at 1-1 when Dayson Croes doubled home pinch runner Evan Alexander all the way from first base with two-out in the top of the ninth. Game two goes Sunday (1 p.m.) in Geneva, Illinois.


Todd Fanning is in a tie for ninth place heading into the final round of the 2024 Canadian Senior Men’s Golf Championship in Saugeen Shores, Ontario. Fanning was one-under par 71 Saturday and is plus one through 54 holes. Ron Cornell was 76 and is plus 12. Jay Doyle was 74 and is also plus 12.
