The Weyburn Gold Wings played their lone exhibition game of the preseason Saturday night, as they entertained the defending national champion Regina Rebels at Crescent Point Place. With a number of new faces in the lineup, it was a chance for fans to get a look at the squad before the regular season kicks off later this month.

The two teams would go back and forth through three periods, as well as two overtime periods before things would be settled in a shootout. When the dust settled, the Rebels would come out on top with a 5-4 win.

Regina took the lead in the first period when Darby Marshall scored 6:28 into the first period. The power play goal was assisted by Tien Woo. The Gold Wings, though, would answer back before the period was over.

With 29 seconds remaining in the first frame Kadence Dansereau, who played with the Rebels last year, would score her first goal as a Gold Wing to even the game up. She was assisted on the tally by Kiah Shields and Kamryn Kish.

In the second period, Regina would break the tie with 3:05 to go in the frame as Cassie Gilbert got the puck past Weyburn goalie Tila Boyd, making it 2-1.

In the third period, the Gold Wings came roaring back.

Just 46 seconds into the period, Shields would score a goal of her own, assisted by Kish and Dansereau, to make it a 2-2 game. Then, 2:30 into the third period, Liv Peck would score to give the Gold Wings the lead. Her tally was assisted by Jade Olszewski.

The Rebels would manage to tie things up just before the halfway mark of the final period of regulation, though, as Berlin Lolacher scored with 10:29 remaining. She was assisted on the goal by Cedar Swan. Then, just over two minutes later, Katelyn Marshall scored to make it 4-3 for the visitors.

Weyburn would respond, though, as Julia Durr found the back of the net with 5:27 to play, assisted by Peyton Halayka, making it 4-4.

The game would go to overtime, with the teams first playing a 5-minute 4-on-4 extra period. With nothing settled, they would go to a 3-on-3 overtime period. Again, nothing would be settled, and a shootout was needed to finish the game off.

In the shootout, Katelyn Marshall would score the winning goal, giving the Rebels the victory.

The Gold Wings will now prepare for their season-opener, coming up on September 25th. They will be hosting the Notre Dame Hounds at Crescent Point Place.
