The job's not done yet, but commuters can now use a new overpass to cross and access the South Perimeter Highway.
Work began in the spring of 2022 on a new interchange for St. Mary's Road and the Perimeter Highway. The project was announced in 2020 by the Conservative government of the time, part of a larger initiative called the "Perimeter Freeway Initiative."
The intersection was the site of multiple fatal collisions in 2021, and the Conservative government of the time awarded a $135 million contract to Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc.
Over the weekend access to the new overpass was opened up to north/south traffic, with access to east and west directions of the Perimeter.
There are roundabouts on each end of the overpass, similar to a roundabout near Oak Bluff at the intersections of Highway 2 and 3 just southwest of the Perimeter Highway.
Lane closures still remain for both east and west traffic of the Perimeter, as well as north and south on St. Mary's Road, and speed reductions also remain.
The project is somewhat on schedule, with completion originally slated for the summer of 2024.
