It has been a stormy day for a large part of southcentral and southeastern Manitoba, complete with heavy rain, hail, strong winds and even a tornado warning.

According to Environment Canada, a fairly moisture-laden air mass is moving into southern Manitoba from the United States. This has resulted in thunderstorm activity throughout the day.

At approximately 4 p.m., Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for parts of southeastern Manitoba, including Steinbach, Niverville and Grunthal. It warned of a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation, advising individuals to take cover immediately if threatening weather approached.

Moments later, the sky opened, and a heavy downpour flooded streets in Steinbach. There was also hail and strong winds, under a very dark sky. By 4:30 pm, the storm ended, and the tornado warning was lifted for Steinbach. However, the warning then moved to Richer and the Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne.

Most rain in a month for Steinbach

Steinbach has seen its most significant rainfall in a month. And, according to Environment Canada, more rain is expected today.

As of Monday at 4:30 p.m., 38 millimetres of rain has fallen so far in Steinbach. That is the highest total since 40 millimetres fell back on August 15.

Storms continue, more warnings rolling out

Meanwhile, Environment Canada is calling for showers with thunderstorms to continue Monday evening for much of the Pembina Valley, Red River Valley, and Southeastern Manitoba.

Storms should end overnight before the sky clears in the early morning hours of Tuesday.

Tuesday is expected to be hot and humid for much of southern Manitoba on Tuesday.
