A powerful weather system is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the Prairies this week, with some regions potentially seeing over 100 mm of rainfall by Thursday. The slow-moving storm could result in localized flooding and stormy conditions, particularly in Saskatchewan and along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

After tornado warnings in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Monday, the system will continue to move eastward, bringing more rain and storms. Thunderstorms are expected in Saskatchewan on Tuesday, with increasing intensity as the day progresses. By nightfall, as the low-pressure system strengthens near the Montana border, rain bands will begin to sweep into the Prairies.

Wednesday is expected to bring the heaviest rainfall, with peak downpours forecast for western Saskatchewan. Gusty northwesterly winds could reach up to 80 km/h across both Alberta and Saskatchewan, adding to the storm’s impact. Some communities in the hardest-hit areas may receive more than 100 mm of rain, significantly increasing the risk of flooding.

The system is expected to weaken by Thursday afternoon, with rain tapering off as the low-pressure area moves north and east. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and have a plan in place to seek shelter if severe weather strikes.
