Heavy rain caused significant flooding across southeastern Manitoba, including in the Village of St. Pierre-Jolys.

Mayor Raymond Maynard noted the heavy rainfall resulted in overland flooding.

In an interview with SteinbachOnline Tuesday morning Maynard said,

"Hwy 59 is underwater from Hebert St. to near Cote Ave. East. In front of the houses, the water is up to the curbs. Cote Ave. E is also submerged in front of about six houses. Despite this, the new drainage system we installed has largely prevented any significant damage. The Heritage School, which previously experienced flooding, remained unaffected due to the recent drainage improvements."

The rainfall, which Agriculture Manitoba reported at 166.8mm as of Tuesday 10:45am, has had a noticeable impact on the area. Describing the town, Maynard said,

“Underwater.”

He continued, “My house is almost lakefront right now, and the park behind me is flooded. I had two inches of water in my shed, but that’s already subsided. So, the reported rainfall amount is accurate.”

Residents have reported issues with sump pumps, as the high-water levels have caused backups into the sanitary sewer system.

“Sump pumps are working, but with the water levels so high, it's backing up into the sanitary sewer. Residents are advised not to use water to avoid flooding their basements. There’s also significant flooding behind the DFSM school, turning it into a large retention pond.”

As for immediate relief efforts, Maynard noted that no requests for sandbags have been received. The local fire department has been active, particularly south of town, where they have been deploying pumps and addressing water flow issues.

“The fire department has been out helping south of town, managing water levels and clearing ditches.”

On the topic of potential long-term damage, Maynard added that for most residents their gardens and lawns appeared to be mostly unaffected.

“My gardens are on raised beds, so I’m not worried about them. The water hasn’t reached the backyards much, and my neighbor’s garden is untouched. The park behind my house has already seen the water levels recede.”

In light of the ongoing situation, the mayor advised drivers to exercise caution.

“Please drive slowly through the flooded streets. Fast-moving vehicles can create waves that might flood yards or even schools. We had a tow truck out all morning pulling vehicles from the water.”

It was also noted on the Village of St Pierre Jolys’ social media page that road closures were in effect. Rue Préfontaine and Avenue de Côte Est are CLOSED to transit traffic. Local traffic only.

The Village also advises their residents that, if you experience basement or home flooding, discontinue using water in your home until conditions improve.

If residents of the Village of St Pierre-Jolys have any drainage questions or concerns to please contact the Village Office at 204-433-7832.

“The public works team is actively managing the situation. The village thanks residents for their patience and cooperation.”
