Canadian icon Terry Fox sparked a nationwide movement with his annual runs, raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

Here in Moose Jaw, a Terry Fox run was held on Sunday, starting from Vanier Collegiate. There were two distances participants had the option of running in the 5 km or 10 km run.

"It went great, we had a little over 60 participants which is only a few runners short from last year. So that's still on par with where we were at for this year," said the organizer of the Moose Jaw Terry Fox run, Stephanie Meyer.

As of Meyer tallying up the funds this week, the run in Moose Jaw raised $5,067. This includes $4,057 from local efforts in the days leading up to and including the run itself, as well as $1,010 in online t-shirt sales from Moose Jaw residents.

Before this year's total Moose Jaw had raised $25,531.30 since 2018 for the Terry Fox Foundation. With this year's funds, Moose Jaw has raised $30,598.30.

"Actually, very cool to see the numbers like this since Terry was always hoping to get $1 for every Canadian and in just the last 7 years, we are nearly at $1 for every Moose Javian! A small but mighty community indeed," stated Meyer.

Meyer started volunteering with the run in 2020 with Craig Hemingway and began organizing in 2022. For her, this is more than just raising money for others who have cancer, but also for her sister who was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and is still around to this day.

"So many cancer survivors go through treatments that ultimately alter their lives forever. That means there are opportunities for researchers to come up with solutions to better the lives of our cancer survivors," said Meyer.
