A weather system from the west coast is the reason for the rain that’s fallen in Moose Jaw over the last couple of days.

“It drew up a lot of moisture from the south,” explained Dave Carlsen, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“This kind of setup is usually more typical of July, really, in the Prairies. But as it happens, we got a July setup in September.”

Southern and southwestern Saskatchewan have seen a deluge over the last couple of days, with Moose Jaw measuring 13.2 mm on Tuesday.

Carlsen said the southwest saw the majority of the rainfall. “Cypress Hills, there were about 90 mm recorded, and on those thunderstorms that we had, it appears that there were some pockets maybe in excess of 150 mm.”

“We don’t have any rain gauges in those places that we know of to verify that, but radar is telling us this, and usually it’s pretty accurate with regard to how much rain [fell].”

Showers in Moose Jaw are expected to last through the morning, with a break in the afternoon today, and a weak system expected to come through the area with more rain on Friday night.

“After that, though, it looks like we’re going to be fairly dry for about a week, and that’s about as far into the future as we can see.”
