On August 8, 2024, the Heeg family paid tribute to the memory of their parents, Art and Betty-Lou Heeg, by placing a memorial bench in front of the Leader Town Office and Library. The bench is a fitting tribute to two individuals who dedicated much of their lives to the Leader community.

Art and Betty-Lou were well-known figures in Leader, each contributing significantly to various aspects of town life. Both were deeply involved in the United Church, as well as local sports, particularly curling and baseball. Their legacy of community spirit continues to be felt by those who knew them.

Betty-Lou Heeg’s contributions extended beyond her role as a supportive member of the community. As the longtime librarian at the Leader Library, she was a beloved figure who left a lasting impact. She launched numerous programs during her tenure, including the popular "Kermit's Corner," a children’s reading initiative. Betty-Lou was also instrumental in starting Girls Softball in the community, providing opportunities for young women to get involved in sports and teamwork.

Art Heeg, known for his sharp sense of humour and warm personality, was an active member of the Leader Lions Club, contributing to many charitable causes and local initiatives. His leadership and dedication to community service exemplified his deep love for Leader.

The placement of the bench in front of the Leader Town Office and Library offers a quiet space for residents and visitors alike to pause and reflect. It is not only a place to sit, but a reminder of the kindness and generosity of two individuals who made a lasting mark on the town.

The Leader community extends its heartfelt thanks to the Heeg family for this meaningful gesture. The bench will serve as a lasting tribute to Art and Betty-Lou, offering a space where their legacy of service, compassion, and community involvement will continue to inspire future generations.
