During the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65's annual general meeting last week in Portage la Prairie, Wendell Keeler was honoured for 50 years of service as a Legion member.
Keeler shared what earned him the recognition.
"I got my 50-year pin for being a member of the Legion and I started out in 1975. My dad got me to sign up for the Legion. It feels great. It's something that you don't know if you're ever going to have the chance to accomplish or not."
He reflected on some of the highlights from his time with the organization.
"Highlights include visiting lots of different Legions and being able to associate with members everywhere. My first Legion membership was in Hartney, Manitoba, which is down in southwestern Manitoba. Then I moved a few times and I always kept my Legion membership up wherever I went."
Keeler encourages young people to follow in his footsteps. He buys memberships for his son, daughter, her husband, and his wife every year.
"I know it only costs $50, so it costs me a little bit of money, but that doesn't bother me at all," he says.
Another member was also recognized with a 50-year pin at the meeting.
