The Calgary Stampede will welcome over 35 youth 4-H clubs from across Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the city this weekend.

The 27th annual 4-H Rodeo will run at the Nutrien Western Event Centre.

On Saturday (Sept. 21) eager participants ranging in age from nine to 20 years old will expand their rodeo skills through a series of clinics taught by industry experts.

"These up-and-coming rodeo stars will then put their new skills to the test and compete in a variety of events, with the first competition, cow riding, taking place on Saturday night," says the stampede in a news release.

Following the first night competitors will participate in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, and goat tying on Sunday (Sept. 22).

The Strathmore Rusty Spurs 4-H Club will also send out members to the event.

Abby Waldner, past president of the Rusty Spurs says the club rides out of Namaka, Alberta.

"4-H is a great opportunity. There's a lot of scholarships, a lot of trips."

According to Waldner, last year the club had 12 members, and she says this year they will have about the same number.

"I love the Strathmore club because we're such a small club that we're all super close and we all get along," says Waldner. "We all know how to have a fun time together and we all love our horses so much."

Waldner, her twin sister, and another intermediate member will be going to this year's event.

"It's going to be cool to be able to get out and learn from industry leaders who have been in the business and who know what they're doing."

Waldner says she recommends anyone to join the 4-H Club.

"I'm flying to Toronto in November with 4-H."
