The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. Defenceman Cam Dineen scored the winner 76 seconds into overtime for the Oilers. David Gustafsson and Dominic Toninato replied for the Jets. Winnipeg netminder Eric Comrie made 25 saves. The Jets, who lost their pre-season opener 5-2 to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday at Canada Life Centre, will play their third of six exhibition games Wednesday at home against Edmonton.
Four months after guiding Canada’s National Para Hockey Team to its first gold medal in seven years at the 2024 World Para Hockey Championship, Hockey Canada has announced the return of the coaching staff for the 2024-25 season. Head coach Russ Herrington (Unionville, ON/ York University, OUA) returns for his third season behind the bench and will be joined again by assistant coaches Mike Fountain (Gravenhurst, ON), Boris Rybalka (Vernon, BC) and Greg Westlake (Oakville, ON). Herrington was named head coach of Canada’s National Para Hockey Team in August 2022 after parts of seven seasons as an assistant coach. Since 2015, he has won a total of 10 medals (two gold, eight silver), including gold at the World Para Hockey Championship in 2017 and 2024. He has also earned silver medals at the 2022 and 2023 Para Hockey Cup as head coach, as well as the 2023 Para Worlds. Herrington was an assistant coach at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, winning a silver medal. He has served as the head coach of the York University men’s hockey team since 2017.
Prairie Mountain won the Souris Sabres junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Predators defeated the host Sabres 25-20, 25-15 in the final. The Ste. Rose Celtics swept the Hamiota Huskies 25-20, 25-23 in the final of the Wawanesa Warriors varsity girls volleyball tournament. Gabrielle Roy won the Elton Sabres varsity girls volleyball tournament. Les Roys defeated the host Sabres 25-15, 22-25, 15-13. The Neelin Spartans beat the Dauphin Clippers 25-13, 25-18 in the final of the Brandon University varsity boys volleyball tournament.
Stony Mountain's Aaron Cockerill fired a final round one-under par 71 and finished in a tie for 35th place at the DP World Tour's PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, England. Cockerill was minus nine and 11 shots back of Billy Horschel, Rory McIlroy and Thristan Lawrence who were tied at minus 20 after 72 holes. Horschel won his second PGA Championship when he drained a 25-foot eagle putt on the second playoff hole. Cockerill move up one spot and is now in 38th place in the Race to Dubai rankings.
