The Portage la Prairie RCMP are reminding people to be prepared if they plan to travel through unknown terrain.

According to an RCMP weekly report, on September 22, Portage RCMP received a report of a lost hunter. The 39-year-old hunter from Winnipeg told their friend that he was lost at 3 p.m. Portage RCMP wasn't notified until shortly after 8 p.m.

When the RCMP arrived at the hunter's last known general area, Road 36 West and Road 54 North, ATVs and drones were used to help locate the hunter. The Portage la Prairie Fire Department and local EMS services also assisted with the search.

After several hours of searching, a drone was able to locate the hunter, yet it took another four hours to extricate him due to the darkness, terrain, and dense bush. After being located and returned to the road, the hunter refused medical attention.

The Portage RCMP would like to remind those planning on hiking, biking, hunting, or travelling through unfamiliar areas to stay prepared. They recommend packing food, water, a lighter, and proper clothing to help ensure your safety.
