The Weyburn Gold Wings were in Battleford on the weekend for a pair of games against the Battlefords Sharks. The U18 AAA squad was looking to pick up their first win of the season on their first road trip of the season. The Sharks, however, had other plans as they would take both of the games, winning 4-1 Saturday afternoon and 6-2 Sunday afternoon.
In Saturday's game, the Sharks dominated the first period, scoring three unanswered goals, two of which came on the power play. The Gold Wings struggled to generate offence, only mustering six shots on goal in the opening frame.
Despite a scoreless second period, the Gold Wings finally got on the board in the third period with a power-play goal from Kaitlyn Mah, assisted by Kadence Dansereau. However, the Sharks quickly responded with a goal from Danika Dureau to solidify their lead.
The Gold Wings were unable to mount a comeback, ultimately succumbing to the Sharks. Goaltender Amy Swayze faced a barrage of shots, making 42 saves on 46 attempts.
Sunday, the Sharks dominated the first period, scoring three unanswered goals, including two on the power play. The Gold Wings rallied with two late goals in the first, from Makenna Sumners and Dansereau, to close the gap.
However, the Sharks pulled away in the second period with two more goals. Anneka Aspaas completed her hat trick in the third, sealing the win for the Sharks.
Swayze would again be busy between the pipes, making 46 saves on 52 shots.
The Gold Wings will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday when they welcome the Prince Albert Northern Bears to Crescent Point Place.
