The Humboldt Broncos faced a tough test when the Yorkton Terriers proved they are all in this season.

The Broncos suffered their first defeat of the season in an uncharacteristically poor performance on home ice, losing 6-2 on Friday night against the Yorkton Terriers.

Losses need to be the forefront of learning, and the Broncs will have a decent amount to learn about what not to do when taking on a high-powered offence like the Terriers. 60-minutes filled with unmitigated mistakes, trips to the penalty box, and loss of assignments led to chasing the game from nearly the opening faceoff.

The Broncos’ first mistake was gifting the SJHL’s leading goal scorer, Jaron Desnoyers, a breakaway who made no mistake with his sixth of the season, giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Following that, the Terriers did benefit off a pair of unfortunate goals that deflected off Broncos players, however, nothing clean was happening for Humboldt, an unusual sight on home ice.

One of the bright spots through Humboldt’s efforts was 2007-born, first-round draft pick, Rylan Hue. Hue, who was playing in his first career SJHL game, was a physical presence, played with a ton of energy, displayed solid penalty killing ability, and scored his first career goal to make his individual night a success.

Yorkton added a late second period goal on a 5-on-3 powerplay and two more goals in the third period, one empty netter, to culminate scoring a league-leading 17 goals through three games.

Tre Fouquette, who’s had a fast start to his Broncos’ tenure, picked up his third goal of the season and now leads all SJHL D-men in goals while being tied for points with six.

Lessons are learned from losses. The Broncos will have a week off between games, giving them enough study time to sharpen up. However, following that is arguably the toughest exam of the season as they will play 6 games in 9 days.

The Broncos will kick off that stretch on Friday, October 4th when they travel to Kindersley to take on the Klippers.
