91 days remain in 2024, which means that construction of the new interchange on QEII north of Calgary may be drawing nearer.

In 2023, it was announced that a $51 million investment over three years would replace the interchange at the intersection of Highway 566 and the QEII Highway, one of the province’s busiest corridors. The goal is to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support growing economic activity in the area, which sees around 80,000 vehicles daily.

The project will involve realigning Highway 566, constructing new loop ramps, and building bridges over the Canadian Pacific Railway crossing and Nose Creek. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025—though it is not yet clear when it will start—and was to be completed in 2027; however, according to the Government of Alberta's website, there are estimates that construction may last until 2028.

When the government announced it in 2023, the project's total cost was estimated at $148 million, with $51 million allocated in the provincial government’s three-year budget plan. In March 2023, Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, emphasized the project's importance for both local residents and businesses.

"This interchange is critical for Alberta families and businesses to ensure safe and efficient travel as our economy grows. Everyone will benefit from this upgrade, whether for daily commutes or the logistics industry," Minister Dreeshen said

Airdrie-East Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Angela Pitt also previously expressed enthusiasm for the much-needed infrastructure upgrade, adding that the project benefits the growing communities around Balzac.

"Anyone who has spent time in this area knows this project is long overdue. Residents and businesses are thrilled with today’s announcement, which will greatly improve traffic congestion and safety."

Rocky View County Mayor Crystal Kissel echoed this sentiment, noting that the project will relieve the area's business and logistics hubs.

"This investment will benefit Balzac and the broader region by improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and increasing economic opportunities. We’re grateful the provincial government is taking action now," she said.

According to the province, the new interchange is crucial for the region's economic development, with industries such as agriculture, energy, manufacturing, and warehousing relying on this transportation corridor.
