Westpark School is hitting all the right notes when it comes to its music program, attracting students eager to express themselves through music and worship. Joshua Bater, the school's Grade 5 to 12 music teacher, leads the program with passion and dedication.

"The worship band is a great opportunity for students in Grades 9 to 12. They audition for a chance to join where they can play instruments like drums, guitar, and keys, or sing. We rehearse every other day and perform at monthly chapels, plus we host two concerts a year."

The worship band, established five years ago, aligns with the school's Christian values, creating a space where students can combine musical talents with their faith.

"It's a community where kids can thrive. Our enrolment in music is high and consists of 40 to 50 per cent of the high school students, which is fantastic."

Grade 12 student Jayla Hadley, who plays drums, shared her experience.

"My favourite part of being in the worship band is having fun while worshipping Jesus. I didn't know how to play drums before joining and Mr. Bater took me under his wing and has taught me everything."

Bater's teaching style has received attention and appreciation from students.

"He's super fun and knowledgeable. He meets us at our skill level, making learning enjoyable."

Fellow worship band member Sophia Smoke, a singer and guitarist, emphasized the emotional depth of the program.

"Making music in our worship band is about our passions and beliefs. It's a unique experience that not many schools offer, and it fosters personal growth."

Sophia also highlighted the importance of music in education today.

"Music is important for development and can open doors in other areas. It's amazing how being a musician can shape who you are."

For Grade 10 student Havyn Fretz, the community aspect is what makes the worship band special.

"The environment is supportive. We can have conversations while playing music, and it feels great to express ourselves together."

Looking ahead, Bater has plans to continue nurturing the program.

"We have our Christmas concert coming up and a spring festival in Winnipeg. But more importantly, I want students to develop life skills through music, teamwork, perseverance, and overcoming challenges."
