Southern Manitoba is gradually recovering from the impact of strong winds that left approximately 25,000 customers without power on Monday.
As of Tuesday morning, Manitoba Hydro has successfully restored power to many areas, though some smaller outages persist across the province.
Yesterday's severe winds, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h, led to extensive damage as trees fell onto power lines, disrupting service in various communities. Notably, Winnipeg was affected, with about 4,500 customers experiencing outages. Additional outages impacted residents in St. Malo, West St. Paul, Portage la Prairie, and several other communities.
Manitoba Hydro crews have been working diligently throughout the day to restore power, with additional personnel brought in to assist with the recovery efforts according to a post online by the utility company. As of Tuesday at 2 p.m., several hundred customers are still without electricity, but Manitoba Hydro is optimistic that they will be restored by the end of the day.
In a Facebook post this afternoon, the utility expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during this challenging time, assuring customers that they are working as quickly and safely as possible.
As recovery efforts continue, residents are reminded to stay vigilant, especially when encountering downed power lines. Manitoba Hydro urges individuals to maintain a safe distance of at least 10 metres and to call 911 if they see any hazards.
