The Soo Line Boxing Club last night knocking out their first eight-week session of a new program, 'Little Hitters', an eight-week introduction to boxing for children ages five to 10.
"There was a lot of interest for the young kids to want to join boxing, but with the big boys and girls, it's really dangerous for them to be running around the same gym as the older kids," explained Assistant Coach Melissa Ducharme.
She said the program is only eight weeks so the kids don't have to commit to a full year, and the classes run for 45 minutes on Tuesdays from 6 to 6:45 p.m. There is already a waitlist for the first round, with another session coming up in January.
"We always start with a little warmup," shared Ducharme. "It's not always necessarily running, sometimes it's jumping and hopping and skipping, and doing different games sometimes, just to get the blood flowing a little bit. Then we always learn the basics of boxing. Stances, how to throw punches, how to move, working the bags, working pads. It's totally the perfect introduction to boxing for anyone who wants to keep boxing."
Gloves and other equipment are supplied, and all the kids need to bring are running shoes, comfortable workout clothing, and water bottles.
