The Zone 4 high school soccer season will end today. Miller will face Garden Valley in Winkler in the boys final. The Aces downed Morden 5-2 in the semifinal. Miller will take on the Thunder in Morden in the girls final. The Aces blanked Garden Valley 6-0 and the Thunder defeated Dufferin Christian 3-1 in the semifinals. Shevchenko will face Dufferin Christian in Carman in the Tier 2 boys final. The Sabres shutdown Roseau Valley 12-0 and the Stingers beat Morris/St. Jean 6-1 in the semifinals. Carman will host Morris/St. Jean in the Tier 2 girls final. The Mavericks blanked Roseau Valley 5-0 in the semifinal.
The Pembina Valley Hawks gave up five first period goals and lost 5-2 to the Winnipeg Bruins Wednesday night at the Southdale Arena. Haiden Friesen and Carson Hiebert did the goal scoring for the Hawks. The Bruins score twice on the power play and once shorthanded in the opening 20 minutes. Pembina Valley netminder Ryler Gates faced 50 shots. The Hawks will face the Interlake Lightning tonight in Morden.
Nino Niederreiter scored twice and Gabriel Vilardi had three assists in the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames at Canada Life Centre. Nikolaj Ehlers, Simon Lundmark and Kyle Connor also scored for the Jets. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 17 saves. The Jets will play their sixth and final pre-season game Friday night against the Flames in Calgary. Winnipeg will open the 2024-25 NHL season against the Oilers in Edmonton next Wednesday.
Kaitlyn Lawes and Matt Dunstone have 2-0 records, Keri Einarson is 1-1 while Chelsea Carey and Reid Carruthers are 0-2 at the Grand Slam of Curling's Tour Challenge in Charlottetown. Lawes defeated Silvana Tirinzoni 4-3; Dunstone downed Joel Retornaz 6-2; Einarson beat Delaney Strouse 7-4; Carey dropped a 7-4 decision to Anna Hasselborg and Carruthers lost 6-5 to Michael Brunner. Dunstone will face Brad Jacobs and Lawes will meet Eun Ji Gim in A Event qualifiers.
The Republic of Korea sits atop the team leaderboard by one-shot over Team Canada 1 following the opening round of the 2024 World Junior Girls Golf Championship at Credit Valley Golf & Country Club in Mississauga, Ont. Sumin Hong and Soomin Oh both shot rounds of 3-under 69 to help lead the Republic of Korea on Wednesday. Defending champions, Team Canada 1 are one shot back. Aphrodite Deng of Calgary shot a 5-under 67 to help lead her team and the individual standings. Clairey Lin of Langley shot an even par 72 and Shauna Liu of Maple, Ont. shot a 3-over 75.
Coach Jesse Marsch has given three players their first call-up to Canada's men's soccer team. Jamie Knight-Lebel, Santiago Lopez and Kwasi Poku were named to Canada's roster. Canada faces Panama in a friendly on October 15th in Toronto.
