Saskatchewan RCMP are warning southwest Saskatchewan residents about a recent series of frauds.
Back on Sept. 13, 2024, Carlyle RCMP received a report of a fraud in which motorists approached another motorist near Highway #13, asking for gas money. They then proceeded to ask for more money, offering a gold ring in exchange for assistance.
Similarly, Shaunavon RCMP responded to the exact same scenario being called in on Sept. 16, 2024. A motorist asks another for gas money, then gives the ring in exchange for further monetary aid.
The jewelry in both these incidents is not genuine. The fraudsters have reportedly been going around gas stations, parking lots, and other public settings.
Saskatchewan RCMP advises that should someone approach you seeking to sell you gold jewellery, you should call the police as soon as possible.
Other iterations of the scammer's gambit play out where they flat out offer to sell the 'gold' to the victim for what may seem like a good deal, only for the victim to late find out the jewelry is fake.
Likewise, they may approach the victim asking for money, claiming they are in an emergency situation such as needing money for a hospital bill or to escape danger. They offer the fake gold as collateral, never to be seen or heard from by the victim again.
The last example provided by Saskatchewan RCMP is where the scammer asks for help, like directions. They then go to thank the victim by placing the jewelry in their hands. When the victim declines, they take back the jewelry along with any other rings the victim may be wearing.
Anyone with information on these scammers or any related incidents can call the RCMP at 310-7267.
