Manitoba Government Connects More Than 1,200 Families with Housing
Media Release - October 4, 2024
More than 1,200 families and individuals in Manitoba have been connected with housing over the last year, Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith announced today.
“Every person deserves a safe and stable place to call home,” said Smith. “As we continue working toward our goal of ending chronic homelessness, it’s important to meet people where they’re at so we can find the right path to housing. We have been able to provide a range of supports and programs for Manitobans, because we know there is no single solution. Together, we can help ensure people live in safety, dignity and stability.”
Since last November, targeted government programs and community partnerships have helped connect people with housing based on their unique situations. This includes:
- 77 individuals who needed safe and appropriate housing to be discharged from hospital so they could receive appropriate follow-up care or live in a space that met their health and accessibility needs;
- more than 120 survivors of gender-based violence who needed a safe place to call home were connected to Manitoba Housing;
- 725 people experiencing homelessness or precarious housing were connected to Manitoba Housing;
- more than 120 people who receive support from Housing First teams, which help people access housing and supports to ensure they can maintain their housing over the long term;
- more than 30 seniors who had been residing in an emergency shelter; and
- nearly 130 people who were connected with housing across Manitoba in Brandon, Dauphin and Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg from new initiatives launched last winter.
