The Steinbach Pistons completed a four-point weekend road trip with a 6-2 victory over the Swan Valley Stampeders in Swan River. The visitors led 3-2 after forty minutes and pulled away thanks to a three-goal third period. Connor Paronuzzi had a pair of goals for the Pistons while the rest went to Jackson Kostiuk, James Fuchs, Cole Cairns and captain Noah Szabo. Steinbach netminder Zack Burleigh made 24 saves.
The Eastman Selects won their 2024-25 Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League home-opener Saturday in Niverville. Vayda Rigaux scored twice and Addison Tomes made 11 saves in recording the shutout as Eastman defeated the Central Plains Capitals 5-0. Danyel Heppner, Kaitlyn Schroeder and Cheyenne Scott Cooke also found the back of the net for the Selects.
The Eastman Selects lost 7-6 in overtime to the Parkland Rangers in Dauphin. Noah Stott had a hat trick for the Selects who scored five times in the third period. Josh Borgfjord, Seth Hooper and Ty Mistelbacher also scored for Eastman.
The Brandon Wheat Kings fell 4-3 to the Swift Current Broncos at Westoba Place. Ty Coupland scored the shootout winner for the Broncos. Carter Klippenstein, Caleb Hadland and Roger McQueen with his eighth of the season did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings. Steinbach’s Luke Mistelbacher scored his third of the season for the Broncos.
Kerri Einarson will face Rachel Homan in the women’s final at the Grand Slam of Curling's Tour Challenge in Charlottetown. Einarson defeated Satsuki Fujisawa 5-4 in an extra end while Homan defeated Kaitlyn Lawes 4-3 in the semifinals. Brad Gushue will meet Bruce Mouat in the men’s final. Gushue downed Matt Dunstone 7-3 while Mouat beat Mike McEwen 6-2 in the semifinals.
The Republic of Korea won the 2024 World Junior Girls Golf Championship for the third time in tournament history, beating Team Canada 1 on a tiebreaker at the Credit Valley Golf & Country Club in Mississauga.
