After picking up their first win of the season Saturday, the U18 AAA Weyburn Gold Wings were looking to make it two in a row when they faced the Prince Albert Bears again Sunday afternoon. The two teams would exchange goals throughout the game, with a last-minute game-tying goal from Kadence Dansereau to force overtime. There, Dansereau would score her second of the day to give the Gold Wings the 3-2 overtime win.
"I think we had to really push hard, and work hard and battle and overcome a lot of adversity with injuries, and having a player at home right now to be with their family,” said Gold Wings head coach Chandy Kaip after the game. “Tila (Boyd) stood on her head the one day (Saturday), and Amy (Swayze) was able to make those stops for us again today.”
The Gold Wings opened the scoring late in the first period when Kamryn Kish scored with 3:30 remaining. Dansereau and Madelyn Sittler would have the assists on the goal. The Bears replied late in the second period when Elizabeth Udell got the puck past Amy Swayze with 2:35 left in the period.
The Gold Wings were on their heels, after 40 minutes, allowing 26 shots on goal while only mustering 12 themselves. This meant Kaip had to call them out in the locker room during the second intermission.
“We need to show up, and we have those goals on the board,” Kaip said she told the team. “Making sure that every shift is your last shift; you’re letting it all out there on the ice. Just showing them a bit of game film in between periods and then just saying ‘You know, we got to be able to get some shots,’ and once they see some game film, they recognize what needs to happen and some adjustments, and in the end it came down to that hard work and bearing down.”
While the Bears would be the ones to break the tie in regulation, when Marly Dumanski scored in regulation, the Gold Wings replied with 59 seconds left on the clock when Dansereau scored her first of the game. Kish and Kiah Shields had the assists on the goal.
In the first five-minute overtime, which was played with four skaters aside, neither team was able to gain the edge. In the second overtime, which was 3-on-3, the Gold Wings would come out on top when Dansereau scored her second of the game during a goal-mouth scramble with 1:35 left to play. The goal, which came on the power play, was assisted by Hannah Guttormson and Kish.
The Gold Wings will now get ready to head to Ontario for a tournament this coming weekend.
