It's Fire Prevention Week in Strathmore and the fire department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to promote the campaign.

Eric Alexander, Strathmore's deputy fire chief says, “Smoke alarms save lives, and Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to make sure yours are in good shape.”

The department offered a few tips to keep homes safe including putting smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every floor. According to the department, residents should test alarms once a month and replace them every 10 years. Also, make sure alarms meet the needs of people with sensory or physical challenges.

"It's a bit of a reminder for everyone to go through their house and make sure everything is safe," added Alexander.

As part of the initiative, the department will host a colouring contest for kids up to 16 years old.

Children and their parents can pick up a colouring sheet at the fire department and send it in fully coloured for a chance to win a few prizes.

Pictures can be dropped off at the firehall until 6 p.m. any day this week.

The department is also offering home safety checks during October along with school visits.
