In the past, it's something that has been reserved for residents of the north. But the phenomenon known as the northern lights has become more common in the southern parts of the province over the last couple of seasons as well.

Monday night, the aurora borealis was on full display in and around Portage and residents who lived outside of the city were treated to quite the show. This year is being heralded as a "solar maximum" year which means it is one of the best opportunities to see the show in decades as well as in places where the lights are not normally on display. It is all due to the sun being more active with solar flares. And it just happens that one of these solar flares occurred this past week.

While the show was visible inside city limits, the best viewing locations were in rural areas where light pollution is not as big a factor. While there is no guarantee when these types of events will happen and sky conditions also play a big part, the rest of the fall season is expected to be above average when it comes to something that always seems to be spectacular no matter how many times you see it.

Check out more photos below taken by our readers from in and around the community, many right from their yard.

It was daytime at night at the Kuhn residence thanks to how bright the lights were.
