Kiona Kelly, owner of Bean Dreamin', recapped her first four months in business as she attended several events throughout Strathmore.

It's been four months since Bean Dreamin' launched in Strathmore.

The local coffee company operates out of a vintage lime-green Volkswagen microbus which serves coffee and other drinks to residents in the area.

The idea for Bean Dreamin' came to Strathmore resident Kiona Kelly four years ago.

"It was a dream for sure," said Kelly. "We found the bus in Medicine Hat. We bought it, started tearing it down, and made it into the mobile coffee bus that it is today."

It took Kelly and her husband four years of work to turn the bus into its current form through a series of retrofits and upgrades to the interior.

"Everything inside is custom, from the countertops to the electrical plugs to the plumbing," added Kelly. "Because I was working full time, I would work, save up, buy something, and work on it."

Kelly's first day in operation was at the Zegil Automotive Car Show on July 8. She says it was a chaotic first day, as the generator failed to work during the show.

"We didn't sleep for four days leading up to that day, but we got it done," said Kelly. "We ran eight extension cords through all of the windows to all the things that needed power. I knew that I could do it, it was problem-solving 101."

It took four years for Bean Dreamin' to go from an idea to a reality.

Kelly is a huge Volkswagen enthusiast. When she's not on the job, she drives a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. She also owns two Beetles, one from 1963 and a recently bought 1968 model.

"I'm a pretty bubbly, fun person, and I feel like the character of the Volkswagen and my character mesh together."

According to Kelly, it's been amazing to see the support that she's gotten from the community since she first opened up.

"I just want to say thank you to the community and Strathmore as a whole for embracing Bean Dreamin' and taking it in as an actual community business. I feel I'm very loved in this town, and I've had nothing but positive feedback," said Kelly.

As for what comes next, Kelly is working on merch for Bean Dreamin', including t-shirts and hats that she hopes to sell in the coming months.
