The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Saints varsity girls volleyball team celebrated a significant victory at a recent tournament in Morden, securing the championship title against three rival teams: Morden, Miami, and Carmen. After finishing second in the round-robin stage, the Saints fought their way to the finals, where they clinched the win, marking a pivotal moment for the team.
Captain Grace Moar expressed the excitement felt by the players.
"Our chemistry showed a lot in our later games. The team's confidence has also grown, resulting in aggressive and assertive gameplay during the tournament."
Moar highlighted the team's hard work and dedication, which showed in their impressive performance, emphasizing the importance of communication and teamwork.
The Saints remain undefeated this season, with four regular-season victories under their belt, Coach Braden Schrader explains.
"We still have room to improve, but we're on the right track. The morale boost from the tournament win has been fantastic for the program."
Standout players from the tournament included Moar for her defensive skills, as well as Sienna Hunter and Brooke Fox, who were honored as players of the game in the finals against Miami. Schrader commended Hunter, a Grade 10 student who seized her opportunity to shine after limited playtime last season.
Looking ahead, Moar expressed her hopes for the remainder of the season.
"We have a good team this year. I think we're here to win."
With the support of their peers and a strong roster, the PCI Saints are eager to continue their winning streak and bring home a championship banner. The enthusiasm surrounding the team signals a promising season ahead for the Saints and their supporters.
