The Provincial High School Cross Country Championships take place today in Clearwater hosted by Prairie Mountain High School. 1,100 runners are expected to compete in the junior varsity and varsity divisions. Miller girls & Morden boys won the Zone 4 varsity championship banners last week at Stephenfield Park. Sanford girls & Morden boys captured the junior varsity team titles.
The Zone 4 High School Hockey League's 2024-25 season begins tonight in Morris as the Mavericks host the defending champion Morden Thunder. The league will operate with nine teams this season. The Northlands Parkway Nighthawks are back and join the Thunder, Mavericks, Miller Aces, Garden Valley Zodiacs, Carman Cougars, Mountain Mustangs, Pembina Tigers and the Portage Collegiate Trojans. Carman will host the Provincial AA High School championship February 27th to March 1st.
The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three unanswered second period goals and fell 4-1 to the Everett Silvertips at Westoba Place. Ben Binder Nord had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings who were outshot 44-31 by Everett. Brandon (4-2-0-1) will play a pair of games in Alberta this weekend. The Wheat Kings will face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday.
The Winnipeg Jets play their NHL season opener tonight against the Oilers in Edmonton, The Jets home opener is Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre. Ville Heinola (ankle) and Logan Stanley (knee) will begin the season on injured reserve.
Four-time Canadian men's curling champion and two-time World champion Kevin Koe has added Aaron Sluchinski to his team at second. Koe dropped Jacques Gauthier from the squad last month. Sluchinski beat Koe in the Alberta final last winter. Tyler Tardi and Karrick Martin round out the team.
Milos Raonic will play for Canada at the Davis Cup Final Eight next month in Spain. He's replacing Felix Auger-Aliassime, who's planning to focus on his humanitarian work in Togo. Canada will play Germany in the quarterfinals on November 20th.
